South Jersey cheesesteak guru opens new place
When you find something you love, you keep on doing it.
That’s pretty much the story of Jawn Steaks. It’s a new cheesesteak joint opened by Dakota Flem, who is a co-founder of Whit of Witout in West Deptford. Which in turn gets its name from a classic ordering style at another famous cheesesteak joint in Philadelphia, Pat’s.
Jawn Steak just opened a few days ago inside the Berlin Farmers Market, giving shoppers another reason to make the trip to one of the region’s most beloved indoor markets.

If the name Jawn has you scratching your head, here’s your quick Philly language lesson. “Jawn” is one of those words that can mean almost anything. It’s a catch-all slang term that’s been part of Philadelphia culture for years. It can mean anything.
Need to describe a sandwich? That’s a jawn.
Any inanimate object? “Hand me that jawn.”
An attitude? “Don’t give me your jawn.”

Somehow Philadelphians always know exactly what someone means, even if the rest of us need a translator.
According to NJ.com, Jawn Steaks is more than just cheesesteaks. It’s chicken sandwiches, bites, and tenders. It’s onion rings and mozzarella sticks and jumbo wings.
They even make their own “Jawn Sauce” in-house and for those cheesesteaks you get your choice of Cooper Sharp, American, provolone, or Cheez Whiz.

The Berlin Farmers Market at 41 Clementon Road in Berlin has been a South Jersey destination for generations.
Whether you’re hunting for fresh produce, baked goods, collectibles, or just wandering the aisles to see what catches your eye, it’s one of those places that’s become part of the local fabric.
Adding Jawn Steaks feels like a perfect match. Because after a few hours of shopping, bargaining, and walking the market, haven’t you earned a cheesesteak?
Or at least that’s the excuse I’d use.
